The FEFU School of Engineering is the former Far Eastern State Technical University (FESTU, 1992-2010), the largest and the best technical university of Eastern Russia, tracing its history from the Institute of Oriental Studies (1899).
At the beginning of the 20th Century, the construction of Trans-Siberian Railway, development of mining, timber industry, shipbuilding, ship repair, and manufacturing required engineers in all these fields. To prepare these specialists, the Institute of Oriental Studies helped establishing of an independent Polytechnic Institute in 1912.
Since 1920, Polytechnic Institute shared the Polytechnic Faculty with the Institute of Oriental Studies, by that time reorganized to Far Eastern State University. In 1923, Polytechnic Institute joined the University.
In 1930, the whole university was reorganized to Far Eastern Technical Institute, since 1992 – Far Eastern Technical University, merged with FEFU In 2010. Through all these reorganizations, the faculty members and researchers in Engineering during a century have retained the national leadership positions in many fields of this profession.
In 2018, the FEFU School of Engineering celebrated the centennial anniversary of engineering education in the Russian Far East.
