Thermophysical properties of the moistened sand used as filler for boreholes with ground heat exchangers

Abstract: The extraction of low-potential energy from ground is carried out with the use of ground heat exchangers. The latter account for 50 per cent of lump-sum costs. At the same time, the borehole filler determine not only lump-sum costs but also the performance indicators affecting the efficiency of the entire heat and cold supply system. The recommended filler for boreholes is bentonite, the cost of which (including delivery) is very high. The authors of the article suggest the use of water-sand mortar on the basis of cheap and easily accessible mortar sand as alternative filler, taking into account the procedure of filling boreholes. It has been demonstrated that the possibility of using an alternative filler is conditioned by such parameters as its thermophysical properties, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and heat capacity exerting effect on the efficiency of the heat exchange process in the filler layer. The calculations of thermophysical properties of moistened sand are presented as well.
Key words: low-potential energy, heat collection system, borehole filler, moistened sand, thermal conductivity coefficient, thermal diffusivity, heat capacity.
