Photoelectric torsiometer for measuring
and monitoring the efficiency of the ship power plants

Abstract: The authors designed and presented a torsiometer circuit, in which they proposed to use the photoelectric method to measure the shaft twist angle, measuring the delay time between optical signals reflected from mirrors that are attached to the ends of the working shaft twisted when torque (or power) is applied. To increase the deformation (torsion angle), the shaft is made not of circular cross section, but in the form of a plate (flat shaft). This paper presents a photoelectric torsiometer circuit, the calculated dependences of the delay time on the rotation speed and the shaft twist angle, the transmitted power from the twist angle and the shaft rotation speed. The purpose of the experimental studies was to measure the angle of twist of the shaft at different speeds of its rotation using photoelectric sensors. The results of measurements of the shaft twist angle by using photoelectric sensors presented in the article show a relatively small scatter of the measurements obtained, especially in the area of large values of the twist angles. Experiments conducted on the model of the presented photoelectric torsion meter confirmed the possibility of using this method of power measurement. The presented torsiometer circuit also allows determining the speed of rotation of the shaft by measuring the pulsation frequency of the reflected optical signal from one of the sensors. It is possible to use this scheme on ship shafting of long length and to measure the torque and power of ship power plants during operation.
