Analysis on the impact of the hull shape on the strength of the frames

Abstract: The hull shape determines the most important qualities of ships, such as navigability, seaworthiness and stability, but it also affects the strength of structural elements. A number of classification societies take into account the curvature of the form of the shell plating when norming its thickness. A similar account for the beams framing's of surface vessels is practically absent. In most cases, the curvature of the ship hull contours has a positive effect and increases strength. This reduces the requirements for the size and the weight of structures.

The paper considers the issue of accounting the hull shape in the Russian practice of norming the strength of frames, and demonstrates limited attention to this issue and the existing disadvantages. The objective was to study the impact of the shape of the frames on their strength under the pressure of the sea. The calculations are performed by the finite element method. The authors have revealed a significant impact, accounting for which can provide a reduction in the mass of onboard structures of ships. Recommended dependencies for possible adjustment of regulatory formulas are proposed.

The results of the calculations showed that the influence of the shape of the frames depends on the mobility of the nodal points associated with the effects of thrust and self-distribution. Such effects can be taken into account in further studies based on three-dimensional models and lamellar idealization of elements. The results of the work are aimed at clarifying the requirements for curved beams of the ship framing and reducing the weight of structures.

Keywords: hull shape, curved frames, impact on strength.
