Prospects for the usage of underwater communication systems
based on magnetic induction (review)

Abstract: An overview of open studies on technical systems using the magnetic-inductive coupling for practical application in freshwater and marine areas is presented. Analysis of the contemporary laboratory and experimental technical developments of international and Russian scientific teams has been undertaken. Prospects of implementation of the magnetic-inductive communication technology are considered, and the main directions of its further development are determined. Characteristics and the assumed parameters of the conceptual models of data transmission systems based on this technology are given, and the key problems of the design, practical use and possible methods of solving such problems are indicated.

Keywords: magnetic induction, underwater communication, ferrite antennas, near-field magnetic communication, permeability, underwater communication channels
