Method for calculating the parameters of vessels interaction with the ground

Abstract: Vessel’s interaction with the ground can be accidental and operational. Vessel groundings are more often associated with navigation errors, which are characterized by relatively high speeds of movement and significant damage to the hulls – up to fractures. The operational interactions of vessels with the ground are often carried out in the absence of forward speed during the drainage process due to low tides in the places of cargo operations. Where necessary, vessels maintain relatively low speeds of movement. The rules of a number of classification societies regulate the level of strength of the vessel hulls and assign them the appropriate marks in the class notations, for example NAABSA. However, the methods for analyzing the parameters of the safe vessels interaction with the ground need to make changes. In particular, this concerns calculation and limiting speed of vessel movement at the moment of contact with the ground to reduce interaction force. The paper proposes the author's method for assessing the parameters of vessel interaction with the ground in a quasi–static setting. The analysis of the influence of the main parameters is carried out. The possibility of applying the methodology at the design stage and in the operation of ships is noted.
