Welding of critical parts of gray cast iron
The article deals with a number of matters. It is concerned with the main causes of failure of critical cast iron parts of marine engines and mechanisms, those being the significant static and cyclic stresses as well as the corrosion-erosion deterioration, abrasive deterioration, and the operation of parts in the conditions of deterioration and cyclic loads. Investigated are the technological capabilities of the gas and electric arc welding of gray cast iron with its being pre-heated to the temperature of 500–550º C by iron electrodes with a special daubing. It has been found that the gas and arc welding of the pearlite gray cast iron with the filler rod of the iron GI25 provides equally strong welded joints, fatigue strength of welded samples being higher than the strength of control samples. The surface plastic deformation by obtained by em-bossing improves the endurance limit of the control samples by 76% and that of the welded ones by 40% of. The basic structural component of the weld produced by hot welding is troostite.
