Concrete durability concept for predicting the service life of structures under frost conditions influences
Abstract: The design of structures in accordance with the life cycle determines the need to develop the predictive methods of concrete durability in relation to various operating conditions. This problem is relevant for seaport structures during operation in the northern and Far Eastern seas of Russia. Despite a large amount of theoretical and experimental works on the problem of concrete durability under frost influence, there are no methods for predicting concrete corrosion in these conditions. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the works devoted to the study of concrete corrosion under frost influence, the author proposes the concept of concrete durability for the variable level zone of port structures, based on the two-stage corrosion process. Believing that the process of concrete destruction itself begins with a critical degree of concrete saturation, the author proposes to evaluate the durability of concrete in real operating conditions by the duration of saturation to a critical degree. Based on this, the degree of water saturation is proposed to be taken as the determining critical property of concrete to predict the durability of concrete in the zone of variable level during frost influence. The author believes that the study of concrete water saturation processes and effect of concrete saturation on durability in real operating conditions are of current interest, which allow to develop the practical models in future and quantifying the aggressiveness of the operation environment. The prediction of durability of concrete with the degree of water saturation allows to plan the maintenance repair during the operation of the structure.
