The Center for the Studies of Russia-Japan Relations was established in 2017 at the initiative of the FEFU and the Japanese company “Mitsubishi Corporation” as a research unit within the Institute of Oriental Studies – School of Regional and International Studies of FEFU.

The Center focuses on the comprehensive studies of political, economic, social, and humanitarian relations between Russia and Japan, with the overarching goal of promoting better understanding and deeper cooperation between the two countries.

One of the Center’s main priorities is exploring the ways how Russia and Japan can enhance their collaboration in the Russian Far East. Another important priority is to nurture the younger generation of scholars and experts in the field of Russian-Japanese relations.

The Center’s main activities:

  • research focused on contemporary Russian-Japanese relations, placing premium on policy-oriented recommendations for the advancement of bilateral relations, particularly in the field of development of the Russian Far East;
  • publications;
  • conferences and workshops;
  • outreach activities with the media and the general public;
  • creating and maintaining a library on Japan and Russian-Japanese relations.
