Primary requirements to granular materials used
for the contact loading of clarifiers
Abstract: Surveys of existing clarifiers with contact loading, carried out at water treatment stations of the Primorsky Territory (Artyomovsky and Rakovsky reservoir hydrosystems, including the one in city of Fokino) made it possible to assess a number of qualitative parameters of granular materials used in these systems. Taking into account the hydrodynamic peculiarities of the clarifiers’ performance, in which the load during the filter cycle is in a fluidized bed, it was determined that the mechanical strength of contact load materials is the most important indicator. At a sufficiently high intensity, the constant abrasive interaction of the grains of the material can lead to its crushing and unacceptable losses during hydraulic regeneration. Ultimately, the authors obtained the physicochemical characteristics of the new filter material. The results of this study can be used in the selection of a filter material for filters and contact clarifiers, as well as in the design of water treatment plants.
